Thousands of SLAPPs have been filed since the tactic was first identified in 1988, and 38 states plus the District of Columbia and Guam have passed laws to help people facing them fight back. But they vary in quality from state to state. Twelve states still have no protections, and federal legislation remains elusive.

The database includes cases in which a litigant filed an anti-SLAPP motion, petitioning a judge to dismiss an alleged attack on their First Amendment right to public expression. In most cases, if the judge agreed, the case was dismissed. If not, the case was allowed to move forward. In some cases involving multiple legal claims, the judge permitted some elements of the case to proceed while dismissing others.
